Grotask 2020

Grow + Task Lamp

Concept

Grotask is a multipurpose lamp designed to function as a grow lamp for plants and as a task lamp, hence the name.

Grotask was designed with a circular economy model in mind based on DFD (Design for disassembly) principles, without any use of glue, with minimal manufacturing processes, sustainable materials and finishes, allowing for easy recyclability.

The lightbulb used is a full spectrum LED, which acts as sunlight for indoor plants’ growth, with a high luminosity output of approximately 1400 lumens and a cool temperature of 5000K, it is suitable as a task/desk lamp.

Exploded View

Grotask is made of:

Cherry wood scraps from a previous project finished with linseed oil, compose the main body of the lamp.

3D printed PLA designed to create the joinery and the lampshade.

Electrical components consist of a switch, an electrical cord, and a full-spectrum LED bulb.

Grotask was designed in the Fall 2020 during the lockdown as a part of Martine Racine’s DART 447 class The Future Life of Objects.

Details

The multipurpose feature of products is proven to increase their psychological life span, that is the time a product is able to be perceived and used as a worthy object.

The design is intentionally minimal to fit any space the lamp is placed in, taking into account that it may be moved around depending on the purpose it’s being used for.

Since Grotask was designed and made from home during the lockdown, the design was planned around making it sufficiently tall and balanced with the available wood scraps, without requiring wood shop machinery.
